KS2 TYPING VOCABULARY​
Basic Vocabulary
Keyboard – The device used to type letters, numbers, and symbols.
Home Row – The row of keys where your fingers rest: A, S, D, F (left hand) and J, K, L, ; (right hand).
Finger Placement – The correct way to place your fingers on the home row for typing.
Space Bar – The long key used to put spaces between words.
Enter Key – The key that starts a new line or confirms something.
Shift Key – The key that makes capital letters or symbols.
Uppercase – Big letters (capital letters), like the ones used for names.
Lowercase – Small letters used for most writing.
Backspace – The key that deletes the letter to the left of the cursor.
Cursor – The blinking line on the screen that shows where the next letter will go.
Intermediate Vocabulary
Touch Typing – Typing without looking at the keyboard, using all your fingers.
Accuracy – Typing words correctly, with fewer mistakes.
Punctuation – Writing marks like full stops (.), commas (,), and question marks (?).
Hand-Eye Coordination – Looking at the screen while typing and letting your fingers remember the keys.
Muscle Memory – When your fingers remember the key positions so you don’t have to think about them.
WPM (Words Per Minute) – A way to measure how many words you can type in one minute.
Caps Lock – A key that makes all letters capital until you turn it off.
Punctuation Marks – Symbols like full stops, exclamation marks, and commas that make writing clearer.
Symbols – Special characters on the keyboard, like @, #, and %.
Ergonomics – Sitting properly and using your hands in the right way to avoid getting hurt when typing.
Advanced Vocabulary
Modifier Keys – Keys like Shift, Ctrl (Control), and Alt that change what other keys do.
Typing Fluency – Typing smoothly and quickly without looking at the keyboard.
Progress Tracker – A tool that shows how much you’ve improved in speed and accuracy over time.
Edit – Making changes to your writing by fixing mistakes or adding words.
Layout – How the keys and your workspace are arranged for better typing.
